I Love Horses
I Love Horses (formerly called Short Stirrups) is designed for Brownie Girl Scouts. This one and one-half hour hands-on session teaches the fundamentals of horses and includes a mini lesson on the horse. The girls are divided into small groups. Each group is assigned a horse that they will measure, weigh and groom. Each girl will be given the opportunity to ride a horse on lead line in either an English or Western saddle. If time permits the girls may select a second ride using the saddle they did not ride in previously. The ride/lesson is one trip around the arena. Each girl will receive a patch that can be worn on the back of her sash/vest when she completes the following: Safety First * Horses are "prey" animals and how to be safe around them * How to give a treat to a horse * What clothes to wear * How to lead a horse How Tall is My Horse? * Why horses are measured in "hands" * How horses are measured today * Find out the height and weight of a horse Horse Grooming * What tools is used to groom a horse * How the tools are used * Learn how to groom a horse Horse Tack * Difference between English and Western saddles * Who uses them and why Riding a Horse * Learn how to mount and dismount * Learn how to make the horse go and stop
